Why We Built This

Built by Someone Who's Filled It Out

ClearanceTrail was started by an Army veteran who spent years in nuclear security, first as a Nuclear Security Officer and later as a Team Leader on the Army's National Composite Adversary Force. He's filled out the SF-86 himself, more than once.

The questions weren't the hard part. Digging up ten years of addresses, old supervisors, references, and travel dates was. ClearanceTrail is the tool he wished he'd had: one private place to keep that history current, so it's ready when the form is.

Gather it once. Keep it current. Never rebuild it from scratch again.

We're not investigators or adjudicators, and we're not affiliated with any government agency.

FAQ

Is this the official SF-86?

No. You fill out the official form only in NBIS eApp, using the link your sponsoring agency or employer sends. ClearanceTrail helps you gather your information beforehand.

Will this help me get a clearance?

We help you get organized and accurate. We can't and don't guarantee or predict any clearance decision. Those are made only by the government.

What does Lifetime Pro cover?

Lifetime Pro is a $199 one-time purchase. At launch, the first 100 Lifetime members get the Founding Lifetime price of $149, with exactly the same coverage. You get every Pro feature, including ones we add later, for as long as ClearanceTrail operates and supports the service. It's for one person and can't be transferred.

Do you give legal advice?

No. For questions about how to answer, talk to your security officer or an attorney. Our resources page lists free legal aid.

Is my data safe?

Your history is encrypted on your device before anything syncs. Passwords must be at least 12 characters and are checked against common and breached passwords right on your device. We don't ask for SSNs or ID numbers. Never enter classified information.

What history does the SF-86 ask for?

Every address and job from the last 10 years, by month and year, with no unexplained gaps, plus someone who knew you at each recent address. Missed periods usually come up in your interview. See our 7 vs. 10 years guide.

What can each entry hold?

Mark dates as estimated, the same way the official form allows, and get a ready-made explanation note. Optionally note where you found each date, like a credit report, lease, utility bill, USPS change-of-address, or PCS orders. Older entries beyond 10 years are kept and tagged for future reinvestigations.

Accessibility options?

Choose Light, Dark, or System color mode, larger text, and high contrast. It works with VoiceOver, TalkBack, and your phone's text-size and reduce-motion settings.

What if I'm military or overseas?

Built-in help covers barracks, on-post housing, PCS moves, and APO/FPO addresses.

How do refunds work after launch?

Purchases after launch will be processed by Paddle, our reseller and merchant of record, under Paddle's standard Buyer Terms and Refund Policy. Nothing is sold before launch, and the waitlist is free.
