How to Prepare for the SF-86
Most of the work on an SF-86 happens before you log in. Know which sections look back 10 years and which look back 7, then gather it once.
The Short Answer
The SF-86 asks for different lookback periods by section. The biggest ones, where you lived and worked, cover 10 years. Many conduct and travel questions cover 7 years. A few questions ask about your whole life. Read each question's wording in the form itself, since it sets the exact period.
What Looks Back 10 Years
| Section | What you'll need |
|---|---|
| 11, Where You Have Lived | Every address, with dates, and a person who knew you at recent addresses |
| 12, Where You Went to School | Schools attended, unless you only attended long ago (see the form for the exact rule) |
| 13, Employment Activities | Every job, gap, and period of unemployment, with no breaks in dates |
What Looks Back 7 Years
| Section | What you'll need |
|---|---|
| 20C, Foreign Travel | Trips outside the U.S., with countries and dates |
| 22, Police Record | Most questions cover 7 years; some ask whether it has ever happened |
| 23, Illegal Use of Drugs | Most questions cover 7 years |
| 26, Financial Record | Most questions cover 7 years; some ask about current status |
A Simple Prep Plan
- Addresses. Pull your free credit report at AnnualCreditReport.com, then fill gaps with leases and mail.
- Jobs. List every employer, title, supervisor, and the gaps between them.
- People. Pick three references who know you well and aren't relatives, and confirm their contact details.
- Travel. Search your email for flight and hotel confirmations from the last 7 years.
- Money. Note any debts, collections, or tax issues and what you've done about them.
Then Open eApp
You'll complete the official form in NBIS eApp after your sponsor starts the request. DCSA's applicant page explains the process. ClearanceTrail, built by an Army veteran who has filled out this form, keeps all of the above in one private timeline that flags gaps before eApp does.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the SF-86 always look back 10 years?
No. Residence, education, and employment generally look back 10 years. Many questions on travel, police record, drugs, and finances look back 7 years, and a few ask about your whole life.
Can I start the SF-86 on my own?
No. A sponsoring agency or cleared employer starts the request and invites you to NBIS eApp.
What if I can't remember an exact date?
Use your best estimate and the form's estimate option where it's offered, and be consistent. Records like credit reports and leases help.
